Musician’s Biography:

Best known for his jazz funk explorations with the prolific trio, Medeski Martin and Wood, Billy Martin is one of the most diverse and exploratory musicians on the planet.  Coming up in the NYC music scene coming into his own in the 70’s and 80’s, Martin honed his chops performing in Broadway orchestras and in his travels to Brazil.

With a robust Brazilian music scene in New York City, Martin was able to build his reputation and music prowess performing with Pe De Boi, Batucada and Bob Moses.  Chuck Mangione picked up Billy Martin to tour and he was also developing as the percussionist for The Lounge Lizards.

Through the New York City music scene, Medeski Martin and Wood came to be bringing complex jazz, funky groove and free improvisation to a magical balance.  With Medeski Martin and Wood, Billy Martin was able to collaboratte with icons like John Zorn, John Scofield, Natalie Merchant, Iggy Pop, Maceo Parker, DJ Logic, Dave Burrell, Wil Blades and so many others.

More than just a drummer, Billy Martin is an accomplished filmmaker, producer, visual artist, educator and arranger.  Billy has done production work with a wide variety of musicians including Flea, Mikey Hart, and Ornette Coleman and has had art installations presented around the world.

Currently Billy Martin is the president and CEO of Creative Music Studio, he runs Amulet Records and hosts regular drum clinics. Billy is a published author and continues to make appearances with Medeski Martin & Wood and various super groups around NYC and the country.
