The story of the success of the song Savage is truly a sign of the times. What was initially the second choice for the single of the album, Savage soared to popularity after TikTok user Keara Wilson launched a “Savage” dance challenge.
After the dance challenge went viral, Megan Thee Stallion jumped on the wave and started pushing the challenge with vigor, asking her fans and friend to choreograph their own dance to the track and post it on TikTok. By March of 2020 Savage become the most played song on the social media app and racked up over 7.5 billion view in the month of March alone.
On the heels of the viral success, Megan Thee Stallion took the single off her EP Suga back into the studio for a special remix with the help of Beyoncé. The remix become the first single on Megan first full album Good News and shot up to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and earned 2021 Grammy nominations for Record of The Year, Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song.
The song walks a line between raunchy and classy which is both reflected in the lyrics and the contrast of Megans rap style and the sultry voice of Beyoncé Knowles. The duo should consider pairing up for more music in the future as it is clearly a winning formula.
