Global superstar Rihanna enters her “Blue Era” as the voice of Smurfette in the upcoming Smurfs animated feature, set for theatrical release in July 2025. The first trailer, released February 6, showcases the singer’s take on the iconic character alongside an all-star ensemble cast.
The film follows the Smurfs on a high-stakes mission through Paris to rescue Papa Smurf from evil wizards Razamel and Gargamel. Rihanna joins a stellar voice cast including Natasha Lyonne, Nick Offerman, Kurt Russell, John Goodman, and Sandra Oh.
“Stepping into Smurfette’s shoes – or should I say boots? – has been an incredible journey,” Rihanna shared on Instagram, teasing what she playfully dubbed her “Blue Era.” The artist serves not only as lead voice talent but also as a producer on the project.
The trailer also hints at new music from the nine-time Grammy winner, who hasn’t released a full album since 2016’s “Anti.” A soundtrack teaser promises “new music from Rihanna” alongside contributions from DJ Khaled, Cardi B, and others, including the new track “Higher Love” by Desi Trill.
This marks Rihanna’s first major film role since 2019’s “Guava Island” and follows her 2023 Super Bowl halftime show performance. The animated feature represents her debut in family entertainment, expanding her creative portfolio beyond music and fashion.
The film’s musical elements blend contemporary artists with classic Smurfs themes, featuring an original score that promises to update the franchise’s sound for modern audiences while maintaining its nostalgic appeal.
