Moog is my favorite synthesizer and electronics company in world. I’m a little partial since they are a local company in Asheville NC where I spend a good chunk of my time. This ground breaking and inventive company really hit a home run with this subsequent 37 key analog synthesizer.
With 40 knobs and 74 switches, there are so many sound-design tools and sequencing options, you can explore the possibilities with this machine for a lifetime. As a two note paraphonic synthesizer you will be mostly using this machine for single note lines which is great for synth bass, but the sequencing is really where it’s at for me.
The enhancements and upgrades for the Sub 37 Tribute Edition are beyond noticeable, offing double the headroom, clever Downes and both mono and duo performance modes which is great for studio and live work. It also feels easier to play than the Sub 37 which for me is great since I am typically using my Moog while also playing the drums. There is noticeable room for boosted compression and saturation which is harmonically pleasing and the low end really pops on this machine.
When I perform with the Subsequent I feel like they really considered that it would be used for live performances because the drive on the head phone jack is very powerful and I have never had problems running the board through head phones will send an out to the sound engineer. It also came with some software which was helpful for getting started.
Overall, I find I get great use out of the looping options and the arppegiators have been super fun to play with.

Can I play chords on this machine?
Yes. but… It’s a two note sequencer and synth. Duo Mode allows you to use two oscillators at the same time and play two different notes while sharing the same audio path. In duo mode you can support yourself with bass drones while playing lead, and messing with effects and whatnot. This is what separates this synth from a monophonic synthesizer. You also don’t have to have it in Duo mode which would only allow you to use one oscillator at a time. In that respect you wouldn’t be “playing chords” technically with your fingers on the keys, but you can be creating chords with the switches and knobs within different soundscapes and wavelengths.
Moog is the best at making synthesizers and this one is incredible. It will open up parts of your playing and ideas you never knew you had! There’s a lot of aggressive and gritty tones that can rock really hard and drive synth solos and bass lines into a new stratosphere. It’s also analog and all the tones are right there, so you can plug and play and don’t have to study the software before you can get to making music.
