Circles is the a step in a new direction for Post Malone. The C major pop rock singalong feels like a departure from a sound that had roots in a seudo alt hip hop style and feels more like a straight ahead pop song.

While stylistically the track feels unique, the melody is not far off from Malones hit song “Rockstar” which makes the song appealing to Malones legion of adoring fans while expanding the reach of the newfound celebrity with the continued ability to write catchy top lines that can be nothing short of infectious.

The similarities between Circles and other hits of Post Malone depart as the song explores a more melancholy vibe that feels introspective and appropriate for the times. Fans and critics worldwide have responded positively to the September 2019 release which was the 3rd single from the Malone’s album Hollywood’s Bleeding as the hit song reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100, topping the chart for three weeks.

After 39 weeks in the top 10 of the US Billboard Hot 100, the song has been nominated for the 2021 Grammy Awards for both Record of The Year and Song Of The Year and makes this the 4th number 1 song for Post Malone in his young music career. Many music industry professionals have speculated that the extended stay in the top 100 is reflective of how relatable the song is to a wide audience, which is evidenced in that the song reached the top 5 in over 14 countries.

While this is clearly a hit song that has been embraced and loved by many, the song has an undercurrent that sits on top of a bass line that sounds dangerously close to “The Less I Know” by Tame Impala to the point where there was wide speculation that Kevin Parker of Tame Impala was the co-writer of the track. That observation is not knock on the song as a whole but adds a bit of intrigue to the lawsuit that Post Malone filed against songwriter Tyler Armes for taking credit for working on the track when Malone claims his involvement began and ended with just being in the room.

While the heavy use of auto-tune accompanied by a Stevie Nicks vibrato can be unnerving to some, it clearly has not hurt the success of one of the most successful singles in history.

Lyrics:

Oh, oh, oh

Oh, oh, oh

Oh, oh, oh

Oh, oh

We couldn’t turn around

‘Til we were upside down

I’ll be the bad guy now

But no, I ain’t too proud

I couldn’t be there

Even when I try

You don’t believe it

We do this every time

Seasons change and our love went cold

Feed the flame ’cause we can’t let go

Run away, but we’re running in circles

Run away, run away

I dare you to do something

I’m waiting on you again

So I don’t take the blame

Run away, but we’re running in circles

Run away, run away, run away

Let go

I got a feeling that it’s time to let go

I say so

I knew that this was doomed from the get go

You thought that it was special, special

But it was just the sex though, the sex though

And I still hear the echoes (the echoes)

I got a feeling that it’s time to let it go

Let it go

Seasons change and our love went cold

Feed the flame ’cause we can’t let go

Run away, but we’re running in circles

Run away, run away

I dare you to do something

I’m waiting on you again

So I don’t take the blame

Run away, but we’re running in circles

Run away, run away, run away

Maybe you don’t understand what I’m going through

It’s only me, what you got to lose?

Make up your mind, tell me, what are you gonna do?

It’s only me, let it go

Seasons change and our love went cold

Feed the flame ’cause we can’t let go

Run away, but we’re running in circles

Run away, run away

I dare you to do something

I’m waiting on you again

So I don’t take the blame

Run away, but we’re running in circles

Run away, run away, run away
