Metallica and Apple have joined forces to deliver a groundbreaking virtual reality concert experience, bringing the band’s explosive live performance directly to fans through cutting-edge technology. The immersive concert film, simply titled “Metallica,” will be available exclusively on Apple Vision Pro starting this Friday, March 14.

Filmed during the sold-out finale of Metallica’s M72 World Tour in Mexico City last September, the experience features full performances of the band’s iconic hits “Whiplash,” “One,” and “Enter Sandman.” Using Apple’s Immersive Video technology, viewers will enjoy unprecedented access to James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett, and Robert Trujillo from multiple vantage points.

“Game changing is putting it lightly,” said Ulrich in a statement. “Seeing our concert like that, along with the energy of the Mexico City fans — it’s very immersive, and it’s super fun. We’ve always been interested in pushing the boundaries.”

To capture the performance, Apple constructed a custom stage layout featuring 14 specialized cameras, including stabilized units, cable-suspended systems, and remote-controlled camera dollies. The result combines ultra-high resolution 180-degree video with spatial audio to create what Apple describes as “unbeatable views of the stage.”

While the experience is free for Apple Vision Pro owners, the headset itself comes with a substantial $3,499 price tag. However, fans without the device can preview the experience through free demos available at Apple Store locations worldwide, also beginning Friday. Appointments can be booked online in advance.

Additionally, an EP titled “M72 World Tour: Mexico City,” featuring the three songs from the VR experience, will be released in spatial audio on Apple Music the same day.

During a recent interview at South by Southwest with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, Ulrich described watching the immersive footage as “pretty overwhelming” and “sort of surreal,” noting the unique perspective it offers on the band’s performance.

Metallica joins other artists who have created exclusive content for Apple Vision Pro, including Alicia Keys, Raye, and The Weeknd, as Apple continues to expand its immersive entertainment offerings.
