Key Takeaways

  • Rhino releases a 14-CD Ween live box set capturing seven unreleased 1994–1995 concerts.
  • Claude Coleman Jr. and Andrew Weiss transformed Ween from drum-machine act to spontaneous live band.
  • A two-LP edition distills 19 performances, offering newcomers a curated entry point into the set.

Before Gener and Dean Ween could become the most gloriously unclassifiable band of their generation, they had to survive becoming an actual band. That transition — from two weirdos with a drum machine to a full touring unit — is what Boognish Provides documents. Rhino releases the 14-CD live album box set on October 16, 2026, packaging seven complete, previously unreleased concerts from the 1994–1995 Chocolate and Cheese tour.

A Lineup Change That Redefined the Live Show

The arrival of drummer Claude Coleman Jr. and bassist Andrew Weiss fundamentally changed what Ween could do in front of a crowd.

Before Coleman and Weiss joined, Aaron Freeman and Mickey Melchiondo were essentially performing over prerecorded drum-machine backing. That matched their deliberately lo-fi, anything-goes studio identity. But the full-band format unlocked something different: actual tension, actual spontaneity, actual danger. The seven shows captured here span October 1994 through June 1995, hitting venues from McCabe’s Guitar Shop in Santa Monica to Hof Ter Lo in Antwerp, Belgium.

The full concert list:

  • McCabe’s Guitar Shop, Santa Monica — Oct. 9, 1994
  • The Metro, Chicago — Oct. 30, 1994
  • First Avenue, Minneapolis — Oct. 31, 1994
  • 40 Watt Club, Athens, Georgia — Feb. 10, 1995
  • Hof Ter Lo, Antwerp, Belgium — March 27, 1995
  • Fox Theatre, Boulder, Colorado — May 20, 1995
  • Trocadero Theatre, Philadelphia — June 16, 1995

Two Formats, Two Commitments

The format split serves two distinct listeners: the completist who wants every note and the curious newcomer who needs a curated way in.

The complete shows from all seven nights are delivered in the 14-CD edition. The two-LP release — out the same day — pulls 19 performances across those same concerts, offering a focused entry point without pretending it’s the whole story. A preview is currently available: a roughly 24-minute live version of “Vallejo,” recorded at the 40 Watt Club in Athens on February 10, 1995. It also closes the vinyl sequence, and it’s a proper introduction to what the full box set promises.

The Athens night, incidentally, ended with Melchiondo reportedly diving over the drum kit into Coleman, both rolling down the stairs into the dressing room and locking the door. Tour sound engineer Kirk Miller recalled it that way in the announcement materials — unverified, but entirely on-brand for Ween.

A full track listing for all 14 CDs hasn’t been publicly released. Approximately 180 songs are documented across the seven shows per Brownbase concert data, though that figure reflects set-list records rather than a confirmed Rhino count.

Ween’s studio records always rewarded close listening. These tapes suggest the live show deserved that same attention all along — and that a band finding its footing in real time, in rooms across two continents, was doing something worth preserving.
