When my nephew showed an interest in drums, I wanted to help find him one of the best acoustic drums for kids that would be affordable, but not a toy. Some great Drum companies have created Jr. Drumsets that kids can use that actually sound professional so you aren’t wasting money on a drum kit your child won’t want to play.
Not all junior drum sets are created equal- there are a wide range from great to downright terrible. Unfortunately, there seems to be more of the lesser quality drumsets available for kids on the market when searching best drums & percussion. For that reason, we got creative and looked at drumsets that, while are not technically Jr. drumsets, would be appropriate purchases for those looking for the best junior drum set for kids.
The goal when I was shopping for the best junior drum sets for my nephew was to find an affordable drumset that would sound and feel good enough that it would inspire him as a beginner drummer to want to play and practice. If the junior drumset sounds and feels terrible, then I can’t expect my nephew to enjoy playing it, which means he wont practice, which in turn means we just threw money away on an ornamental toy.
What Makes The Best Drumset for Kids?
The goal with a young beginner drummer is to provide the child with an instrument that they will enjoy playing. With a high quality junior drum set, you are more likely setting up your child up for success and longevity on the drums. If the drums sound good and feel good to play, it will be hard to keep your child from wanting to practice. If the drumset feels like a toy, plan on the drumset collecting dust.
Understandably, adults don’t want to spend too much money on a junior drum set for kids if they don’t know if the child is going to stick with drums. Fortunately, there are some great junior drum sets on the market that are affordable and include everything you need to get your child started down their path as a drummer.
In addition to great drumsets intended for children, there are also professional quality drumsets designed for drummers that need small footprints for things like practicing in apartments and playing city concerts and bars that have a tight space for the drummer. While these professional drumsets aren’t necessarily intended for children, they are small sized, affordable drumsets that we at Music Minds feel are incredible options and alternatives for the best drum sets for kids.
Finding The Best Drumset For A Kid
Affordability
Affordability matters when purchasing a drumset for a kid. Price will determine if you can actually afford to buy a drumset now, or if you’re going to end up saying- no its too expensive, we can’t purchase anything at this time. So we did the research and narrowed down these picks to drumsets under $500.
Quality
How do you find a quality drumset that is affordable to purchase for a child? There are some great options by trustworthy brands that have designed kits specifically for kids. This is so important when researching because you don’t want to end up with a toy instead of a real junior drumkit that is affordable.
Longevity
A junior drumset should last a long time as your child is learning, practicing and growing. True drumkits by professional brands will be durable enough to last.
Inspiration
Look
Look is not just a vanity thing, it truly is important when choosing a drumset depending on what you plan on doing with your career. If you hope to be on stages, in concert halls, or even for music videos- you want something that looks professional and appealing.
Sound
How your drumset sounds will ultimately be the most important thing to you. Of course, the cost is a major part of the consideration, but for your child to keep using the drumset- the most important thing to consider is how it sounds.
